"Hit us hard" - Baumann out with concussion

"Hit us hard" - Baumann out with concussion

The 2-3 defeat against Dortmund, with its highly controversial goal, has consequences for Hoffenheim's national goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. The TSG captain feels he is not sufficiently protected.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's national goalkeeper Oliver Baumann is currently out due to a concussion. The 34-year-old sustained the injury in the much-discussed scene of Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 winning goal in the Bundesliga last Saturday.

"My diagnosis clearly demonstrates that on the pitch, it's all about the safety of the players, who, in the worst case, can even suffer consequential injuries from such situations," Baumann said in a statement from the Kraichgau club. "Therefore, in the interest of the players' health, there can be no two opinions about immediately interrupting the game in the event of possible head injuries – regardless of the game situation at that moment."

BVB goal after header caused outrage

Baumann will miss the next match of the 15th-placed team, who have not yet secured their place in the league, on Saturday at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The captain took Carney Chukwuemeka's knee to the head in stoppage time against BVB, suffering a graze and a bruise. Immediately afterward, when the TSG keeper couldn't quite get back to his feet, Waldemar Anton scored for Dortmund. Referee Benjamin Brand awarded the goal despite vehement protests from Hoffenheim.

Baumann's absence - "Hit us hard"

Examinations at a hospital have now also revealed a concussion in Baumann. "Oli's concussion hits us really hard. Not only did we lose the game against Borussia Dortmund due to what we consider an irregular goal, but now our captain and pillar of the TSG goal in the final stretch of the season is also out," said Hoffenheim's sporting director Andreas Schicker. They still believe the referee should have stopped the game immediately. It is unclear how long Baumann will be sidelined and whether his next appearance for coach Julian Nagelsmann's DFB team is also in jeopardy. The German national team will face Portugal in the Nations League semifinals in Munich on June 4.
